Immigration: a new cultural insight into sport 

Social and sports policy research

The social research for the programme Immigration: a new cultural insight into sport focused on three main axes: listen to the voices of immigrants; the analysis of policies promoted by public administration; and the identification and study of sports practice habits and their organization. Studies undertaken included:

• Sport and Immigration in Spain: the role of sport in the integration of citizens.
  Study funded by the Spanish Sports Council (2006).
  Analysis of immigration policies promoted by the regional government in Catalonia, Andalusia and Madrid, and a qualitative approach to first-generation immigrants in Spain through case studies.
• Multiculturalism in sports policies: analysis of the adaptation of local policies in Catalonia to the guidelines promoted by the European Union.
  Study funded by the Patronat Català Pro-Europa (2007).
  Qualitative research on the policies and actions promoted by the Catalan public administrations for the provision of sport in the emerging multicultural context in Catalonia, as well as the analysis on how basic principles established at European level in this area are applied.
• The role of sport in the integration of the adult immigrant population of international origin in Catalonia.
  Study funded by the Secretariat for Immigration and the General Direction of Research of the Generalitat de Catalunya (2007).
  Study of sports practice by first-generation adult immigrants in Catalonia, with special attention to nationalities with a more significant presence, and the definition of indicators and best practices for the integration of cultural groups.
• Indicators on the integration of the foreign population through sport in Spain.
  Study funded by the Spanish Sports Council (2007).
  Definition of a set of social indicators on the integration of foreign population through sport in Spain that contribute to the definition, implementation and evaluation of sports policies in a multicultural context.
• Study on the sporting practice of immigrant women in Catalonia.
  Study funded by the Secretariat for Immigration and the General Direction of Research of the Generalitat de Catalunya (2006).
  Intervention proposals to promote the sporting participation of international women immigrants, especially those from Latin America or a Muslim culture, based on the study of sports practice needs and habits and the analysis of initiatives.
