Gavin Poynter
International Chair in Olympism. Invited professor 2011
Gavin Poynter is Chair, London East Research Institute (LERI) and Professor of Social Sciences at the University of East London. He has carried out research into industrial restructuring and economic regeneration; knowledge, culture and the rise of the new economy; management and work organisation in the service sector and historical patterns of innovation and technological change. He has widely published on London 2012, the economics of the service industries and urban regeneration. His most recent book publication (with Dr I. MacRury eds.) is Olympic Cities and the remaking of London (Ashgate Press, September 2009).
Gavin Poynter was appointed as invited professor of the International Chair in Olympism for 2011. The theme of the Chair was The City and the Olympic Games, with a particular attention to the issues of urban regeneration and legacy, and the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games. His stage at the UAB was scheduled during the 28 November to 3 December 2011. The programme of activities organised in collaboration with the UAB Urbanization Observatory included a seminar on London 2012: Evaluating the Impact of the Games on Urban Development, and the Opening conference of the 2011-2012 academic course of the Olympic Studies Centre at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (CEO-UAB): Olympic cities.
