John MacAloon

International Chair in Olympism. Invited professor 1994

Professor of Social Science and Director of the Social Science artistic programme at the University of Chicago (United States). Prof. MacAloon specialises in cultural anthropology and sociology.

Dr. MacAloon was appointed as the 1st visiting professor of the International Chair in Olympism in 1995. During his stay at the CEO-UAB, Prof. MacAloon’s work focused on the cultural dimension of the Olympic ceremonies. The programme of activities included: various university conferences and seminars on culture and the Olympic Games; a paper given at the international symposium on Olympic ceremonies held in Lausanne in 1995; and the co-edition of the conference proceedings entitled Olympic Ceremonies, Historical Continuity and Cultural Exchange.
