Raymond Boyle
International Chair in Olympism. Invited professor 2009
Dr Boyle is Professor in Communications at the Centre for Cultural Policy Research at the University of Glasgow, and Co-Director of the Masters Programme in Media Management. His research interest in sport and the media has resulted in a number of publications, including Sport and National Identity in the European Media (1993), Power Play: Sport the Media and Popular Culture (2000: Pearson), Football In the New Media Age (2004: Routledge), and Sports Journalism: Context and Issues (Sage: 2006). A new and fully updated version of Power Playappeared in 2009 (Edinburgh University Press). He secured a major AHRC grant to investigate from 2009 the public understanding of business through television and representations of entrepreneurship.
Dr. Raymond Boyle was appointed as the 15th visiting professor of the International Chair in Olympism in 2009, which was devoted to new media in sport and focused on the challenges brought by the entrance and spread of new media (mobile, Internet, etc.) in the sporting world.
Organised activities included: the conference and colloquium When football creates identities: Celtic Glasgow and Barça on debate and a seminar on new media and sport . The activities were developed within the framework of the Group of Studies on Communication and Culture, coordinated by professor Miquel de Moragas and recognised as Consolidated Research Group by the Catalan Programme of Research and Innovation 2005-2008 (ref. 2005/SGR-00181).
